The teacher uses multiple methods of assessment to

engage learners in their own growth, monitor learner

progress, guide planning and instruction, and

determine whether the outcomes described in content

standards have been met.

Rationale 1:

Kahoot and Quizizz

During my student teaching at Quail Hollow Elementary I was able to see how the classroom teacher used assessment data gathered through multiple on-line “games”. In collaborating with him on where each student was at in their understanding of the concepts we were teaching, we could see topics that we needed to devote more time to and those that we would not need to spend as much time on. These quick and fun on-line assessments were invaluable in maintaining student engagement while informing our instruction. I personally designed many such assessments using the Kohoot and Quizizz platforms. They helped me to moniter learner progress, guide planning and instruction and determine whether they had achieved the desired learning. I plan to use these formative assessments when teaching my future students because they are invaluable to informing my practice.

Rationale 2:

Logging Progress

During my student teaching at Quail Hollow Elementary I kept careful record of students’ scores in all the assessment tools we had at our disposal. This included the self corrected homework, district wide assessments, end of unit tests etc. This data was invaluable in the creation of effective collaborative small groups, seating arrangements, targeted lesson plans etc. Multiple strategies were employed to make the most use of instructional time that were driven by this data. Often times stronger students would be placed together to challenge each other to higher levels. Other times those higher assessing students were tasked with being aides or editors to other students. Leveraging the power of effective data accumulated through multiple means of assessment allowed for more streamlined and targeted instruction that I could clearly see guided more students towards mastery of the topics required for us to cover in the Utah Core Standards.

Multi-Tiered Systems of

Supports (MTSS)

Utah’s MTSS is designed to support educators in developing evidence-based practices that support students learning. This website is a great resource for Local Education Agencies to understand the support offered by the Utah State Board of Education to provide high quality, equitable education to all students.

Teared

Instruction/Intervention

The Response-to-Intervention model uses a teared instruction model. This allows for students needs are met based on the nature and severity of a student’s difficulties. Tier 1 ensures that all students receive a high-quality education. Tier 2 targets students who are not making adequate progress in the core curriculum. Tier 3 involves an intensive intervention that targets the students’ skill deficits until the problem is remedied and to prevent future problems.

Utah Parent Center

The Utah Parent Center is a nonprofit organization formed by parents of children with all disabilities to help them connect with the services and agencies that might best help and support each other. Their staff is comprised of parents with disabilities of all ages who understand the unique challenges parents of children with disabilities have in navigating the systems of support. They hold regular workshops, provide online training, hold an annual conference attended by hundreds of parents and professionals. They are there to support and coach parents through the raising of their child with special needs to bring out their full potential.
