The teacher plans instruction to support students in

meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon

knowledge of content areas, Utah Core Standards,

practices, and the community context.

Rationale 1:

Social Studies Unit Plan

While at Westminster College, I collaborated with Marley Rodwick on a multi-week Unit Plan (See PDF) that included an extensive array of Utah Core Standards and multiple learning styles that attempted to guide students through exploring the rich history, cultural traditions and meanings behind the clothes we all wear. The goal for the unit was to give students a deeper understanding of the evolution of clothing, how clothing is manufactured and how different cultures and traditions are represented within the clothing we see people wear every day to denote things like status, rebelliousness, authority and power in society and how those styles can evolve and change over time. This unit plan demonstrate my ability to consider community context when designing learning experiences based on core standards.

Rationale 2:

Math Lesson Plans

During my student teaching placement at Quail Hollow Elementary, I collaborated with the classroom teacher on multiple lesson plans in all subject areas that included the Utah Core Standards being covered during those weeks. The Unit that I felt was most effective was the one I taught on dividing four digit dividends with two digit divisors (See PDF) . From the results of the pre-assessment I designed, it was apparent that this class did not understand how to solve these types of problems. Working with the students over multiple lessons by adapting the school district’s provided instructional materials, I was able to guide the students to what I considered to be a successful outcome. All of the students were able to demonstrate a clear understanding of two digit long division in a variety of assessment methods. They met these rigorous learning goals due to my instructional planning based on the core standards.

Multi-Tiered Systems of

Supports (MTSS)

Utah’s MTSS is designed to support educators in developing evidence-based practices that support students learning. This website is a great resource for Local Education Agencies to understand the support offered by the Utah State Board of Education to provide high quality, equitable education to all students.

Teared

Instruction/Intervention

The Response-to-Intervention model uses a teared instruction model. This allows for students needs are met based on the nature and severity of a student’s difficulties. Tier 1 ensures that all students receive a high-quality education. Tier 2 targets students who are not making adequate progress in the core curriculum. Tier 3 involves an intensive intervention that targets the students’ skill deficits until the problem is remedied and to prevent future problems.

Utah Parent Center

The Utah Parent Center is a nonprofit organization formed by parents of children with all disabilities to help them connect with the services and agencies that might best help and support each other. Their staff is comprised of parents with disabilities of all ages who understand the unique challenges parents of children with disabilities have in navigating the systems of support. They hold regular workshops, provide online training, hold an annual conference attended by hundreds of parents and professionals. They are there to support and coach parents through the raising of their child with special needs to bring out their full potential.
